10 Causes of Periodontitis

Smoking Cigarette

Commonly known as gum disease, periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissues. If left untreated, it can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Severe cases of periodontitis can lead to loosened teeth as well as tooth loss.

Following are the main causes that can lead to periodontitis

  1. Smoking or chewing tobacco
  2. Poor oral health habits
  3. Usage of recreational drugs; such as marijuana or vape
  4. Nutrition deficiency; such as vitamin C
  5. Hormonal changes; especially those related to puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
  6. Gingivitis
  7. Obesity
  8. Genetics
  9. Certain conditions that weaken immunity; such as leukemia, HIV/AIDS, and cancer treatment
  10. Diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn’s disease

However, despite being common, periodontitis is largely preventable. In fact, most people can prevent it just by maintaining good oral health. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing after meals, and getting regular dental checkups won’t just reduce your risk of developing periodontitis but also improve your chances of successful treatment in case you develop it.

If you notice any symptoms of periodontitis, it is important to consult a dentist as soon as possible. Even if you aren’t suffering from periodontitis, these symptoms could point towards some other underlying dental issues, and early diagnosis can increase your chances of successful treatment. If you reside in Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Forest Valley, or Friendly Acres, Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry for a consultation immediately.
