Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatments

When it comes to treating childhood dental cavities, a dental filling has been the preferred method of treatment. However, in some cases, a new way of cavity treatment, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatments, may be recommended. Luckily, here at Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry, we offer silver diamine fluoride treatment, which is a liquid that is applied to your child’s teeth in order to help prevent tooth cavities from forming, growing or spreading.

SDF treatments are not a substitute for a dental filling, but they have been shown to stop tooth decay from worsening. These treatments are a great way to keep childhood decay in check until your child’s baby teeth fall out or until a dental filling, or crown is recommended.

Silver Diamine Fluoride in Greensboro, NC

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid that has been shown to kill the types of bacteria that cause tooth decay and dental cavities. Because of its ability to combat bacteria, silver has been used to treat a variety of diseases and conditions over the past several decades. In addition to silver, SDF also uses the protective qualities of fluoride to stop dental cavities, reduce decay, and prevent further deterioration.

SDF is not a long-term solution for the treatment of dental cavities like a filling would be. But for your child’s baby teeth, SDF can be an excellent option for controlling cavities and decay until the adult teeth come in. The best candidates for silver diamine fluoride treatments are:

  • Children who have multiple cavities, or cavities that are recurring and difficult to treat.
  • Children with severe dental anxiety.
  • Children who are at a higher risk for dental cavities and tooth decay.
  • Special needs children.

Here at Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry, we know that silver diamine fluoride can be the best solution for many of our patients. We are proud to offer this treatment to children with multiple dental cavities or fear of the dentist’s office. For more information or to see if your child would be a good candidate for SDF, our pediatric dentist will discuss with you your options in cavity management.
