Are Dental X-Rays Safe for My Child?

Dentist examining x-ray

Dental x-rays are a common diagnostic tool used to identify problems in the mouth, including cavities, impacted teeth, and other issues that may not be visible during a routine dental exam. While x-rays are generally considered safe for adults and children, many parents are understandably concerned about the potential risks of exposing their children to radiation.

Is It Safe?

The good news is that dental x-rays are relatively low in radiation compared to other types of medical imaging, such as CT scans or MRI scans. Additionally, dentists take extra precautions to ensure that children are exposed to as little radiation as possible during imaging. This may include using protective equipment like lead aprons or digital x-ray technology, which produces lower radiation levels than traditional film x-rays.

How Important Is It?

Despite these precautions, however, there is still some risk associated with dental x-rays, particularly if your child has had many x-rays over a short period. For this reason, it's important to discuss any concerns you may have with your child's pediatric dentist and work together to develop a plan that balances diagnostic imaging with the potential risks.

The Final Word

Most experts agree that dental x-rays outweigh the risks, particularly if your child is experiencing oral health issues that require further investigation. By working closely with your child's pediatric dentist and taking the necessary precautions, you can help ensure that your child receives the best possible care while minimizing their radiation exposure.
