The Importance of Being Grateful this Thanksgiving

Family at dinnerFor many Americans, Thanksgiving is more about cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and turkey than anything else. But in the end, Thanksgiving is a holiday centered around being grateful for the things we have. While Thanksgiving is a great time to express our gratitude, it’s important to be thankful every day of the year. In fact, gratitude can actually have some pretty positive impacts on your overall health!

How Gratitude Can Improve Your Health

Below are a few ways that research has shown being thankful can positively impact your overall health:

  • Sleep Better – Writing down the things you’re thankful for in a gratitude journal before bed can improve the way you sleep. In fact, it’s been found that people who write down the things they’re thankful for benefit from better, longer, and more peaceful sleep patterns.
  • Optimism – Being consistently grateful for what you have and actively looking for things to be thankful for can contribute to a more positive and healthier outlook on life. Science has shown that finding things to be happy about can actually make you happier!
  • Improve Relationships – People enjoy being appreciated and they also enjoy being around people who are happy and positive. Expressing your gratitude for your friends and family can strengthen your current relationships and help you form new ones.
  • Heart Health – Lastly, all of the above combined factors (better, healthier sleep patterns, more positive moods, etc.) have been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke.
