Is Sedation Dentistry Safe? (Child Related)

sedation

Going to a dentist can make many children nervous and scared, especially if the procedure is more extensive. Sedation dentistry provides relaxation to the patients and helps them cope with the stress of the treatment.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Children?

Sedation dentistry is considered safe when it is used with appropriate measures. It is an important tool that helps children tolerate the required dental procedures.

Different Types of Sedation

In dentistry, sedation is mild and usually does not put the patient to sleep. However, if your child is scared about the next dental procedure, sedation can help them become a bit more comfortable.

There are different types of sedation to choose from.

Oral Sedation

This sedative is in the form of a pill, and the child will be asked to ingest the pill before the procedure starts. Oral sedatives help children to relax without putting them to sleep.

Nitrous Oxide

This is commonly known as laughing gas. This sedative is inhaled through a mask, and the combination of oxygen and nitrogen helps calm down your child and reduces their anxiety.

Intravenous Sedation

IV sedation is the third option that can help relax your child, but this involves needles. The needle is inserted into the vein behind the hand. The child will be sedated and not be too aware of the dental work going on.

Final Thoughts

These are the three different types of sedatives used to sedate children. Sedation is usually a safe process, but you should make sure that you discuss the medical conditions with the dentist beforehand.
