What to Expect at My Child's Dental Exam?

If you're waiting for your kid to develop a full-grown set of baby teeth before you take them to their first dental appointment, you may already be too late. It is estimated that at least 1 in 4 kids in the U.S. develop cavities by the time they turn 4. This means they may already have a cavity before they get all of their teeth.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that parents should take their children for their first dental checkup before they turn one. But what would the dentist do when there are barely a few teeth in the mouth? Read on to find out.

What to Expect from Your Kid's First Dental Appointment?

Your kid's first dental appointment would likely be quick, and there would be nothing to worry about.

The pediatric dentist will first have a small conversation with you – the parent. They will talk about your little one's oral habits. In addition to that, they will ask a series of questions about the family's dental and medical history to identify any factors that may affect the child's oral health. They will also inquire about your child's medical history and if they've had any medical issues so far, so make sure you have the relevant information on hand.

Afterward, they will try to get a conversation going with your child to help them stay more comfortable during the examination.

The physical exam includes the dentist observing the development and growth of your kid's teeth and oral tissues. If the dentist notices any plaque, they will clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If there are any other concerns, your dentist will let you know about them and guide you about how to take care of your kid's teeth to prevent any issues in the future.
