3 Foods That Protect Your Kids From Cavity

Nowadays, children have become more prone to cavities. A general lack of oral hygiene and the types of food they consume are significant reasons for this issue. The consumption of junk and sugary foods leads to weakened teeth and affects their oral health.

Hence, aside from encouraging oral hygiene, altering their diet is key in improving their oral health.

Foods That Help Prevent Cavities

  • Cheese: Cheese is an alkaline food that is known to increase the pH level of the mouth. The alkaline forms a film around the teeth and prevents them from decaying. It also reduces bacterial growth in the mouth.  Several studies indicate that cheese can prevent tooth demineralization and cavity formation. It is recommended to eat a raw slice of cheese by itself instead of spreading it on a piece of bread, as the carbs in bread can initiate the tooth decay process.

  • Poultry and Fish: Poultry and fish are full of proteins, essentials minerals, and vitamins. These help to prevent the pH levels from dropping and also promote mineralization and tooth health.

  • Foods Rich in Fiber: Fiber-rich foods are very good for teeth health. The high vitamin A content in carrots helps promote better antibody response of the saliva, whereas the carotenoids help protect the teeth from cavities. Apples are another fiber-rich food that helps with saliva flow in the mouth, reducing food lodging in the teeth.

Feeding these foods to your kids and avoiding sugary foods will help make their teeth stronger and healthier.

It is also crucial that they regularly visit a pediatrician to ensure that they don’t have any underlying oral health issues. If you’re looking for a pediatrician and live in Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Forest Valley, or Friendly Acres, visit Dr. Naomi Lane at Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry to book an appointment.
