Though one of the oldest remedies for a toothache, warm salt water gargles work like a miracle against a toothache. All you need to do is take a glass of warm water and mix one tablespoon of salt in it. Now swish the water in your mouth for 30 seconds, spit it out and repeat. Doing so will help in reducing the pain and swelling and clean away any bacteria or dirt.
Cloves contain a compound called eugenol, which makes it a natural anesthetic, meaning it can have a numbing effect on your teeth. You simply have to apply a small amount of clove oil on a cotton ball and rub it over the affected area until the pain subsides.
Note: Never pour clove oil directly over the area; instead, just apply a couple of drops.
Having anti-inflammatory medicines such as codeine, aspirin, and paracetamol is one of the quickest ways to treat a toothache.
Applying ice cubes or an ice bag over the area of pain helps in reducing discomfort and eases inflammation. You can simply do this by wrapping some ice cubes in a thin cloth and compressing it against your cheek (the affected area).
